From July 4 to 5, 2025, the 2025 Greater Bay Area Summit on Artificial Intelligence and Data Science Applications & 18th China R Conference was successfully held at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (Guangzhou) (HKUST(GZ)). Centered on the theme “Applications of Artificial Intelligence and Data Science,” the summit brought together nearly one hundred experts, scholars, and industry leaders to share insights in Nansha.
Prof. Kaishun Wu, Associate Vice-President (Research) of HKUST(GZ), emphasized: “Artificial intelligence and data science are reshaping industrial ecosystems and innovation paradigms. HKUST(GZ) will continue fostering interdisciplinary research platforms to advance core technological breakthroughs aligned with the industrial needs of the Greater Bay Area.”
Chair Prof. Fugee Tsung stated: “This summit focuses on building a closed-loop ‘industry-academia-research-application’ ecosystem. By prioritizing real-world applications—especially those resonating with HKUST(GZ)’s Institute of Industrial Intelligence and Informatics—we aim not only to innovate algorithms but also drive statistical methodologies into fields like smart manufacturing, medicine, and fintech.”
Prof. Xiaowen Chu, Head of Data Science and Analytics Thrust at HKUST(GZ), noted: “Beyond reinforcing R language’s role in research, this year’s conference expands into AI frontiers: statistical modeling, data-driven decision-making, and large language models—showcasing deep integration from tools to practice.”
Dr. Zhenshun Lin of Capital of Statistics added: “We will deepen cross-disciplinary collaboration to ensure statistical theory and data science become core engines of innovation.”
Eighteen keynote speeches were delivered at HKUST(GZ)’s Lecture Hall C. Scholars and industry pioneers presented cutting-edge research on AI algorithms, big data analytics breakthroughs, industrial AI applications, healthcare LLMs (Large Language Models), and livestreaming innovations—sparking vibrant discussions among attendees.
Multiple sessions addressed how AI/data science can accelerate technological innovation and industrial upgrading across the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area. Discussions covered regional advantages, development needs, integration opportunities, and challenges—offering actionable insights for digital transformation.
The “offline convergence for knowledge sharing” ethos thrived during breaks/networking sessions: Researchers debated theoretical frontiers versus practical hurdles; Enterprises explored collaborations with academic leaders; And students gained inspiration through direct dialogue with field authorities. The event effectively catalyzed collaboration networks while advancing knowledge exchange.
This summit established a premier platform for AI/data science discourse while accelerating the translation of research into tangible outcomes. It significantly advances innovation across the Greater Bay Area and nationwide—demonstrating how integrated statistics and data science propel intelligent transformation forward.
